Radiation Lab with Equipment

The Department of Nuclear Engineering at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville, conducts research in a number of areas critical for the exploration of space.

Three faculty members, Lawrence Townsend, Steven Zinkle, and Lawrence Heilbronn, lead research groups studying space radiation transport, solar particle event prediction, nuclear power systems, shielding materials testing, and dosimetry.  The research involves measurements at accelerator facilities around the world, the development and use of state-of-the-art radiation transport codes, development of nuclear power systems for use in extreme environments, and collaborations with researchers at several NASA centers, including NASA Langley, NASA Johnson, NASA Ames, and NASA Marshall.
